打ち合わせを終え、オフィスへ戻るタクシーの中で英語のオーバーラッピング練習をしてみた。正直すごく恥ずかしかったけれど、思い切ってやってみてよかった。
After wrapping up my meeting, I tried practicing English overlapping in the taxi back to the office; I was honestly quite embarrassed, but I am glad I swallowed my pride and did it.
以前ラジオで「移動時間はただの移動ではなく、何かを生み出す時間だ」と聞いてから、ずっと実践したかったのだ。車内で電話や仕事をする人もいる中、私はレッスンの代わりにひたすらブツブツと英語を口に出し続けた。
I had wanted to try this ever since hearing on a radio show that travel time shouldn’t just be for moving, but for producing something of value. While others might use taxi rides for phone calls or work, I spent the time muttering English phrases continuously as a substitute for a formal lesson.
よく考えれば、見知らぬ運転手さんに変に思われることより、本番のビジネス会議で英語が使えないことの方がよっぽど恥ずかしくて悔しい。他人の目を気にして躊躇している場合ではないのだ。
When I really think about it, the frustration and shame of being unable to speak English in an actual business meeting is far worse than looking a bit strange to a stranger driving a taxi. I simply don’t have the luxury of hesitating over what others might think.
これからは移動などの隙間時間を最大限に有効活用し、自分の能力向上に一直線にフォーカスしていきたい。
Moving forward, I intend to maximize my use of these small pockets of downtime and stay laser-focused on improving my capabilities.
語学は成長の度合いが数字で見えにくく、もどかしい部分もある。それでも「英語で会議を運営できるようになる」という明確なゴールに向けて、この泥臭い努力を続けていこうと思う。
Language learning can be frustrating because progress is hard to measure in concrete numbers, but I am determined to continue this gritty effort toward my ultimate goal: being able to smoothly facilitate meetings in English.
