Nostalgia on Rails: A Family Journey on the Cassiopeia

You can hear the voice recording for the diary.

I took the Cassiopeia train with my family, traveling from Ueno Station to Sendai Station on a one-way, daytime trip that lasted about five hours.

The last time I rode the Cassiopeia was over 20 years ago when I was in high school, so this trip felt especially nostalgic.

Although we didn’t catch the train arriving at the station because I didn’t know the exact time it would come to the platform, I realized later that the moment is easily viewable online. However, the experience of riding the train with my family is something much more valuable—a memory we’ll cherish.

During the ride, we spent some time in the lounge car, watching the landscape roll by and admiring the powerful appearance of the electric locomotive pulling the train. My son and I, along with other passengers, enjoyed the view. Since there were more train enthusiasts on this ride than on the Shikishima, we had to rotate between the prime seats at the front of the car.

My son seemed to have a great time watching the scenery go by while chatting with other passengers. For me, the experience reinforced my belief that spending money on memorable experiences, rather than luxury items, is much more fulfilling. This trip also helped me clarify what I should do next in terms of managing my assets.

To be continued.
